The Mancos shale covers miles and miles of the Southwest in soft eroding layers of ochre and gray. Here a dark snaking line of cliffs punctuate the velvety landscape with dramatic shadows. In the middle of the day it looks flat and gray, but here in early morning the subtle colors and dramatic forms are both challenge and inspiration.
