Early Morning Ferry
I was inspired by the spectacular of the sunrise on the 6:30 a.m. ferry. I wanted to capture the glow of the sun as it edged around the clouds and the long cigar shaped cloud that hung over the hills.
I hardly ever use an underpainting and love softer stick pastels. For the clouds I start with a dark layer and then I build up the highlights with light with lighter colors. I use my fingers in the palm of my hand to really smudge and blend in the colors. At the very end I put the rim of light around the clouds.
For the water, again I started with the dark colors and then put in the white highlights. I use a pastel pencil to put in some of the lines in the water. This is painting brings me great joy. That is why I'm sharing it with you.
