The War

The War, Emerging Pastel Artist
The War
I made this artwork for my BFA portfolio that I am pursuing at University of Alaska Fairbanks. I currently don't have a lot of money as many students, so I primarily use pastels that I have purchased off of amazon called Monte Marte. Im working towards purchasing a Blue Earth set to take my work to the next level. That being said this work is about the story of war and how it destroys a society. It's layered in panels, 6 total. The upper panel depicts a planet devoid of industrialization. the next shows a cities being built. The next is the people of the planet living in harmony with their cities. The next is them involve in war. The next is the cities devastated by war. And the last panel depicts the people from panel 3 all killed with one character of horror reaching out from the dead. My process is quickly establishing an underpainting, composing of a hue shifted gradient that establishes my value areas. I then block in colors I wish to use and then finalize the image with Fiber-Castell pencils if applicable. I do all blending with fingers and sometimes paper towel. I worked in a lot of complements and tapped off areas that I needed to to establish those lines.
