Sunset in Fall

Fall sunsets in Southern California almost always have this distinct orange line at the horizon line with a beautiful gradient blending up to yellow, then turquoise, and then a deep blue. One night I happened to catch sight this familiar backdrop with startling pink clouds juxtaposed on top and I knew I had to paint all of these gorgeous colors together. I ran across the street and grabbed reference shots with my camera. I began the piece with an alcohol underpainting to establish local colors, which I was then able to layer on top with fresh colors as I refined the relationship between the clouds and the sky.
