Phoenix on the stairs

I loved the sense of mystery in this pose: why is she on the stairs? Is she waiting for someone? I aimed to convey this mood in my piece. This was painted on a repurposed Pastelmat. I loved the process: I was painting over another portrait, which was upside down. At first the other image was more prominent than the one of Phoenix, but as I added layers, Phoenix emerged more strongly and the other portrait disappeared.
